"Why'd you do it? Why'd you lie for me?" Her voice was vaguely accusatory, but she couldn't help it. He'd been the one to tell her to tell the truth, and then he lied, to save her. "Why do you even care?"
Kyle regarded her calmly, his lips curving into a smile. "It was the right thing to do." The answer was simple enough to him. Really, if you followed a certain path of logic, it wasn't a lie - if he hadn't jumped off the roof, she wouldn't have been startled into crashing.
"Kyle," she sighed, exasperated. "It wasn't right."
"Yes, it was."
The fact that he was so unruffled was unnerving and frustrating. Come to think of it, she hadn't ever seen him get upset. Scared, maybe, the first time she'd seen him, but ... there was a peace about him. "Kyle..." she sighed, and shook her head before her face softened into a smile. "I still don't think you should have done it ... but thank you."
"You're welcome."
The silence stretched between them. For her, it was awkward. For him, it was just quiet. She shifted her weight a little, one hand wrapping around the elbow of her other arm as she half-hugged herself. She tried to think of something to say, something to do, but she'd come over here in a huff, and now that he'd chased away her irritation, she wasn't sure where to go, or what to do. "I should go," she finally managed.
"Why?" He tilted his head to one side to regard her.
Why, indeed? Because she couldn't think of anything else to do, to say? "My mom will come looking for me."
He nodded, understanding. "Will you come back?"
There was such a hopeful look about him, that she smiled, then nodded. "Yes. I'll come back."
"I'll be here."
Her smile broadened into a grin, and she nodded. "Okay. I'll see you later, Kyle." She waved, then slipped away, glancing once over her shoulder to him before he was out of sight.
He was such a mystery ... but she had a feeling she'd like trying to figure him out - or helping him to figure himself out.
